My definition of a global citizen scholar has evolved significantly throughout my time in the University Honors Program. Initially, I believed a global citizen scholar possessed a deep understanding and appreciation for different cultures, perspectives, and world issues. However, as I progressed through the program, I understood that being a global citizen scholar goes beyond simply being informed about global issues. It also involves actively engaging with and contributing to global communities in a meaningful and impactful way.

          As a Supplemental Instruction leader, I have worked closely with students from diverse backgrounds and cultures, significantly influencing my understanding of what it means to be a global citizen scholar. In this role, I have learned the importance of empathy, cultural competence, and inclusivity in fostering a supportive and collaborative learning environment. One key aspect of being a global citizen scholar is engaging with and learning from individuals with different perspectives and experiences. As an SI leader, I have worked with students from various cultural backgrounds, academic interests, and learning styles. Through this experience, I have come to appreciate the value of diversity in enriching our collective learning experience and broadening our understanding of complex issues.

          Volunteering at the Bearcat Pantry has been a transformative experience that has deepened my understanding of what it means to be a global citizen scholar. This opportunity taught me the importance of empathy, compassion, and social responsibility in addressing food insecurity and promoting social justice. Moreover, volunteering at the food pantry has highlighted the interconnectedness of global issues and the importance of taking action to create positive change on a local level. Food insecurity is not just a local issue but a global one affecting millions worldwide. By volunteering at the food pantry, I understand that being a global citizen scholar means recognizing our shared humanity and taking responsibility for addressing the root causes of inequity and injustice.

          These experiences have helped me develop key skills such as empathy, cultural competence, and communication, all of which are essential for being a global citizen scholar. By actively engaging with diverse communities and perspectives, I have learned to appreciate the value of different viewpoints and the importance of working collaboratively towards common goals. This has broadened my understanding of global issues and helped me become a more effective and compassionate leader.

Moreover, my experiences as a global citizen scholar have deeply influenced my personal goals and values. I have come to realize the significance of empathy, compassion, and cultural competence in fostering strong and inclusive communities. I am resolute in my commitment to continue engaging with diverse perspectives and communities, both in my academic and professional pursuits and in my personal life. This commitment is not just a fleeting interest, but a lifelong dedication that I am determined to uphold.
