AACRC TRANSITIONS

During my Freshman year, I was a part of the AACRC Transitions Program for first-year African American students. This program intends to provide a sense of belonging and guidance as first-year students make their way through their first year of college. I thoroughly enjoyed that we had discussions with our mentors on the ups and downs of college and how we can succeed despite everything going on in the world. After moving to a new state, the transition community made me feel like I had a family away from home to lean on. With all of the horrific social injustice that has occurred during this school year, we took the time to reflect and express our emotions. Times like these made me fortunate to feel heard and understood.

The transitions program has made sure that the students are well educated to succeed in the world outside of school, such as job opportunities. I was able to speak with employers from P&G where they gave tips on how to be a competitive applicant when applying to jobs and how to do well in interviews. This program provides multiple opportunities for students of color to further their leadership skills, where we took part in workshops to exercise those skills. During the rest of my time at UC, I plan to be involved as a base mentor for incoming transition students where I can make an impact on their lives just as mine was.
